Appearance-wise, Milk Snakes typically measure between 3 to 6 feet in length, staying relatively small, with a width comparable to a quarter or more. They can live an average of 15 years in captivity. Different sub-species of Milk Snakes may exhibit variations in size and build, from the chunkier Pueblan Black and Mexican Milk Snakes to the more slender Nelson’s Milk Snake.
When handling Milk Snakes, it’s essential to allow them a week or two to acclimate to their new environment before initiating any contact. Being gentle during handling will prevent any aggressive responses. Keep in mind that hatchlings may be more prone to biting due to their size difference.
Feeding Milk Snakes requires attention to their diet. In the wild, they consume various prey, such as frogs and small lizards. In captivity, it’s best to feed them frozen/thawed mice, avoiding wild food and live mice, which may carry parasites or harm the snake. As they grow older, the size of the mice they require will increase accordingly.
